Chemotherapy Treatment

Chemotherapy is a systemic treatment that uses drugs to kill or inhibit the growth of cancer cells. In gynecologic oncology, chemotherapy may be combined with surgery and radiotherapy or used as the primary treatment in advanced-stage cancers of the ovary, uterus, and cervix.

Chemotherapy drugs are usually administered intravenously (IV) or orally. The treatment plan is personalized according to the cancer type, stage, patient’s general health, and previous treatments. The most commonly used agents in gynecologic cancers include platinum-based drugs (cisplatin, carboplatin), taxanes (paclitaxel), and topoisomerase inhibitors.

Treatment effectiveness is monitored by tumor size, tumor markers, and imaging studies. Common side effects include bone marrow suppression, hair loss, nausea, vomiting, and fatigue. Most side effects can be managed effectively with modern supportive care.

The goal of chemotherapy is to control the disease while maintaining quality of life. Patients are closely monitored by a multidisciplinary team during therapy. Appropriate drug selection, dosage, and scheduling improve treatment success and facilitate side effect management.
