Pelvic Organs
The female genital organs are located within the pelvic bony structures, positioned between the bladder (anteriorly) and the large intestine (posteriorly). Similarly, the ureters, which are the urinary pathways that carry urine from the kidneys to the bladder, pass on either side of the uterus (Figure 1).
This anatomical relationship means that tumors of the genital system may secondarily involve these adjacent organs, or injury to neighboring organs may occur during surgery. During routine removal of the uterus and ovaries, careful dissection is required to separate the specimen from the bladder in front, the large intestine behind, and the bilateral ureters.
